Hofstra Opera Theater: Lysistrata: Die Verschworenen and Selections from Die Winterreise

Hofstra Opera Theater under the artistic direction of Isabel Milenski and musical direction of Adam Glaser present Schubert And War: Lysistrata: Die Verschworenen and Selections from Die Winterreise. How can one woman end a war? Schubert’s one-act opera, Die Verschworenen asks this very question. Composed in 1802, the opera is based on the Greek playwright Aristophanes’s play Lysistrata (first performed in 411 BC). Lysistrata was first performed in the 20th year of the Pelopponesian war. In order to end the war and all future wars, our evening's heroine persuades the city's women to withhold sexual acts from their husbands. What better answer to battle man’s drive for war than another powerful drive: sex! Many wars later, we find ourselves almost in 2015 and again at war. Our suggestion? Women Unite! In the second half of the evening, our cause continues as we stage selections from Schubert’s Die Winterreise (The Winter Trip). We will continue our journey down war's strange, isolating path. Please join Hofstra Opera Theater as we protest war’s costs to humanity and our environment.
