Hofstra Cultural Center presents From the Emancipation Proclamation to Barack Obama to the Death of Trayvon Martin

The Hofstra Cultural Center presents a two-day conference to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation. 2013 also marks the 50th anniversary of the 1963 March on Washington. As Americans commemorate these anniversaries, we contemplate how far the nation has come in its quest to become a more equal society.

In 1903, the 40th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, W.E.B. DuBois wrote, “the problem of the Twentieth Century is the problem of the color-line.” At the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. declared: “But one hundred years later, we must face the tragic fact that the Negro is still not free. One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination.”
