Russian Film Screening of Hipsters with Dr. Benjamin Rifkin

Todorovsky's 2008 romantic musical film "Hipsters" was a huge hit in Russia.  The film is about a group of young people in Moscow in the very uncertain period following Stalin's death in 1953 before Khrushchev's clear ascendancy to leadership in 1956. These young people are fascinated by American beat culture, love jazz, and the flamboyant clothes they believe hip Americans are wearing. In defiance of the very grey conservative norms of Stalinist culture, these young people are stylistically wild - and suffer the consequences. The film features great music and spectacular dance scenes with extraordinary choreography.

The film is in Russian with English subtitles (even the songs are subtitled) and it carries a message of particular relevance for us today.

We will start with brief pre-screening remarks by Dr. Benjamin Rifkin, Professor of Russian at Hofstra University, at 7 pm on a zoom link that will be provided to you prior to the event upon registration.  Then we will watch the film through another link.  After the film is over, we will reconvene on Zoom for post-film discussion and concluding remarks by Dr. Rifkin.

This will be the last Russian film screening of the academic year, so please be sure to join us!

The deadline for registration is 12 noon on Friday, April 23.
