Global Justice Day: Connecting the Local and Global: Food, Clothing and Shelter

The first of two Global Justice Day panels. In this panel nonprofit directors and Hofstra activists come together to discuss food justice, garment workers’ rights, housing, and community organizing on and off campus.

Panelists include:

Rae Gomez, Executive Director of Brownsville Community Culinary Center
Kean Kelly, Chief Executive Director of Interfaith Nutrition Network
Mary Anne Trasciatti, Professor of Rhetoric and Public Advocacy, Director of Labor Studies and President of Remember the Triangle Fire Coalition
Margaret Engel, Senior CCE Fellow and President of Mu Kappa Geographical Honor Society

Co-moderated by Margaret Abraham, Professor of Sociology and Jasmin Cruise, Center for Civic Engagement Fellow

Global Justice Day: Connecting the Local and Global, will present two panels on the theme of workers and work in the global economy. Panels will consider workers’ struggles in three global industries: food, fashion, and technology. Speakers will include scholars and activists from organizations addressing these issues on Long Island.

Organized by the Center for Civic Engagement and co-sponsored by the Labor Studies Program and the Center for the Study of Labor and Democracy.

A panel of labor activists and researchers of community organizing and agency from across the country come together to discuss different ways of creating change and pushing for workers’ rights.

Panelists Include:

Avir Waxman, former organizer of California Uber and Lyft drivers for SEIU
Kim Kelly, labor journalist covering UFCW organizing drive at Amazon
Supriya Baily, Associate Professor, George Mason University, researching ways in which adult women exercise agency in multiple spheres of life
Clarissa Redwine, New York University Fellow and Kickstarter Union Organizer
Ifeoma Ozoma, Founder and Principal of Earthseed
 

Co-moderated by Sandra Stacki, Professor of Teaching, Learning and Technology and Olivia Tu, Center for Civic Engagement Fellow and Vice President of Mu Kappa Geographical Honor Society
