NPHW 2021: Understanding Suicide Causes & Prevention: Overview (Central Nassau Guidance Training)

This overview session will provide attendees with further details on two seperate mental health related trainings that are offered through Central Nassau Guidance. Attendees will be provided with dates and times for follow-up larger scale sessions through which official trainings will be provided. Titles and descriptions of follow-up training sessions are: Mental Health First Aid (Adult) -- Participants learn how to use the ALGEE acronym (Assess/Approach, Listen non-judgmentally, Give reassurance, Encourage appropriate professional help, Encourage self-help and other support strategies). When participants are completed with the 2hr pre-work and 6hr full-day virtual live training they are Mental Health First Aiders and will know how to recognize a mental health crisis (i.e. overdose, psychosis, depression, suicide, panic attack). They will also have the tools to support and refer someone experiencing said crisis.

QPR for Suicide Prevention - QPR was developed by Dr. Paul Quinnett and stands for Question Persuade Refer. In addition to learning how to recognize a crisis, this training focuses on the participants learning how to question someone effectively regarding potential thoughts of suicide, how to persuade someone to receive the most effective help for their current state and how to refer someone to the next step for further, ongoing assistance. This training can be completed between 1.5-2hrs. Participants are given statistical information, as well as information about risk factors, warning signs and protective factors in order to be effective, “Gatekeepers.” Although this training focuses on suicide the QPR strategies learned can be used to support any mental health crisis.
