Working, a musical

Working, a musical celebrating the people in the essential jobs that keep our communities running, will be performed by Hofstra University’s Department of Drama and Dance, March 19-28. Tickets to live streamed performances are available for purchase.

Based on the Studs Terkel book Working: People Talk About What They Do All Day and How They Feel About What They Do (1974), Working was adapted for the stage by Stephen Schwartz (Godspell, Wicked, Pippin) and Nina Faso (Godspell, The Rocky Horror Show). Unlike most musicals, the score is an eclectic collaboration featuring works by composers including Hofstra alumnus Craig Cornelia, James Taylor, Micki Grant, Mary Rodgers and Susan Birkenhead. A 2009 revival of the musical incorporated two new songs by Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda.

On Monday, March 15, 2021, at 1 p.m., Director Cindy Rosenthal will moderate a zoom discussion with Hofstra Labor Studies Director Mary Anne Trasciatti and Working composer Craig Carnelia. A Hofstra alumnus, Carnelia won the role of The Boy in off-Broadway's The Fantasticks while he was a sophomore.
