Hofstra University Honors College presents True Believers: A Conversation with Writer Colin Dickey

HUHC Associate Dean Vimala Pasupathi will host a conversation on conspiracy theories with Colin Dickey. You’ve heard of Big Foot, the Loch Ness Monster, maybe even Pizza Gate, and now Q-Anon…Colin has studied these as well as many others that some of us are too mainstream to have even heard about. Have you ever thought about what’s at work underneath the surface in conspiracy theories and the groups that promote them? Why might people believe in things like these, and what does it say about humanity that they do so? Few people have thought as much about this phenomenon across history and culture as Dr. Dickey, writer and expert in all things weird. From Vampire hunters and those 12-foot skeletons that were everywhere back in October, that were everywhere last October, to Lemming behaviorr, clown fish gender, and palindromes, Dickey is the tour guide you want for such things, one who can not only make you laugh, but also make you think. In addition to his books, The Unidentified (2020), Ghostland (2016), Afterlives of the Saints (2012), and Cranioklepty (2009), Dickey’s writing appears in The LA Review of Books, Lapham’s Quarterly, The New Republic, Pacific Standard, Gen, The Vespiary, Longreads and Mother Jones. You can catch him in various radio and podcast segments on NPR and WNYC, as well as in his “Monster of the Month” series with Atlas Obscura.com--and now at our event on March 3rd from 2:30-4pm.

Sign up by 2:15 pm March 3/3 to receive the Zoom link and to be entered into the raffle for a copy of Dr. Dickey’s book, The Unidentified: Mythical Monsters, Alien Encounters, and Our Obsession with the Unexplained! RSVP here: https://huhc.wufoo.com/forms/psiqba11i2xbxf/
