Intimacies to Apocalypso: Relations Across the Afro-Atlantic

Yomaira Figueroa (Michigan State University) will present on “Intimacies to Apocalypso: Relations Across the Afro-Atlantic”, part of her book  Decolonizing Diasporas: Radical Mappings of Afro-Atlantic Literature (Northwestern University Press, 2020).

Decolonizing Diasporas examines how themes of intimacy, witnessing, dispossession, reparations, and futurities are remapped in the works of African & Afro-diasporic writers and artists from Equatorial Guinea, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and Cuba. The talk will examine how themes of intimacy, witnessing, dispossession, reparations, and futurities are remapped in these works and centers the cultural productions of peoples of African descent as Afro-diasporic imaginaries that subvert coloniality and offer new ways to approach questions of home, location, belonging, and justice.

Yomaira C. Figueroa-Vásquez is an Afro-Puerto Rican writer, teacher, and organizer from Hoboken, NJShe is Associate Professor of Afro-Diaspora Studies at Michigan State University and the author of Decolonizing Diasporas: Radical Mappings of Afro-Atlantic Literature. Her published work can be found in Hypatia, Decolonization, CENTRO, Small Axe, Frontiers, Hispanofilia, Post 45 Contemporaries, and SX Salon. She is a founder of both the MSU Womxn of Color Initiative and #ProyectoPalabrasPR.
