HU Museum of Art - Second Fridays: Photographer Berenice Abbott
Berenice Abbott was a central figure in and an important bridge between the photographic circles and cultural hubs of Paris and New York in the early 20th century. Returning from Europe in 1929, she began a series of documentary photographs of New York City that, supported by the Works Progress Administration Federal Art Project, debuted in 1939 as the exhibition and publication Changing New York. Another of Abbott's projects was an illustration of scientific phenomenon, produced in collaboration with the Physical Sciences Study Committee based at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. These photographs reveal her technical experimentation and her aesthetic accomplishments.
