Film Screening and Discussion with Dr. Benjamin Rifkin: Chukhray's 1997 Film 'The Thief'

Pavel Chukhray's 1997 film "The Thief" tells the story of a young boy whose stepfather turns out to be a thief.  There are two versions of the film, each with a different ending.  We will watch the shorter version of the film through Amazon Prime (link below) and then through our Zoom discussion platform, Dr. Rifkin will show the alternate ending.  Then we will discuss how the meaning of the film depends on the film's given ending and what each version of the film says to us as American viewers in the 21st century.

This film would be rated (R) in the American film rating system.

The Amazon Prime link for the film is https://www.amazon.com/Thief-Vladimir-Mashkov/dp/B071FTXL5N/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=chukhray+the+thief&qid=1597945656&s=instant-video&sr=1-1

The discussion, including the viewing of the alternative ending, will be through a Zoom link that you will receive upon registration for the event.
