Italian American Lecture Series: The Books of the Roman Ghetto Under the Nazi Occupation

Italian American Lecture Series presents for fall 2020, Reflections on a Past Darkness and Present Hope in Italy. The first lecture in the series will be The Books of the Roman Ghetto Under the Nazi Occupation. In September 1943, the Nazi occupied Rome. A month later, a special unit of the SS paid a visit to the Synagogue and Rabbinical College. Returning the next day, they confiscated thousands of valuable and irreplaceable books and manuscripts, some dating back to the Middle Ages, and sent the collections to Frankfurt. The fate of the libraries is one of the lesser-known stories of World War II.
