Who Thought Engineering Could Be Hilarious?
Mauro J. Caputi, Associate Professor of Engineering, Fred DeMatteis School of Engineering and Applied Science, Hofstra University
Helene Fortunoff Theater, Monroe Lecture Center, South Campus
Can a love of TV, movies, and teaching be combined with an outgoing and humorous personality to produce a first-year engineering design class that is entertaining as well as educational? That’s just what happened when Dr. Caputi decided to conduct his ENGG 15 lecture class as if it were a live TV show. He facilitates the course in an engaging and humorous style to allow students to have a great deal of fun while actively learning and experiencing the three main areas of study: the informed design process, teamwork, and communication. Why not see for yourself how Dr. Caputi is developing innovative ways to make engineering classes accessible and fun for all. Professor Caputi was named a 2014 Teacher of the Year.

Applications of Business Analytics
Alexander Pelaez, Associate Professor of Information Systems and Business Analytics, Zarb School of Business, Hofstra University
Room 109 C.V. Starr, South Campus
Companies are spending millions of dollars on implementing analytics and developing analytics teams. Professor Pelaez -- a 2019 Teacher of the Year --discusses what business analytics is, how companies are using it, and how it affects everything we do, from shopping to better health care. Special emphasis is placed on a nonmathematical explanation of widely used techniques at major corporations.

11:30 a.m.-12:20 p.m. Faculty Lectures

What to Expect ... When Your Student Is in College
Benjamin Rifkin, Dean of Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
Leo A. Guthart Cultural Center Theater, Joan and Donald E. Axinn Library,
First Floor, South Campus
You may have read What to Expect When You’re Expecting, but now that your student is in college, there doesn’t seem to be a guidebook. What should you expect in the first year, sophomore year, junior year, and senior year? What questions can you ask your student to help them find their way to great learning experiences? What should you do when they ask you for different kinds of help? Benjamin Rifkin, dean of Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences -- as well as the father of two recent college graduates -- shares his perspective on the challenges of parenting college students.

Sensation vs. Perception: Synonyms or Complements?
Elisabeth Ploran, Associate Professor of Psychology, School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Plaza Room West, Sondra and David S. Mack Student Center, North Campus
We often use the terms “sense” and “perceive” as if they are the same concept, but psychology and biology teach us a different story. Professor Ploran -- a 2019 Teacher of the Year -- explores some differences between the two actions, including how our brain can trick us into perceiving things that are not there.
