FORM presents 'Word Play' Opening Reception

Hofstra’s student-run art gallery FORM is presenting Word Play, a collection of digital artwork by Issybella Lang ’20, September 22-29. A graphic design and history major from Dover, DE, Lang says she knew early on that she had an affinity for arts and a dream to pursue a career in the visual arts.

“I’ve been doodling and sketching for as long as I can remember. I have a project from kindergarten where I said I was going to be an artist when I grew up. I really got into graphic design in middle school, and came into my own style my first year at Hofstra.”

As the name of the exhibit suggests, Word Play features more than 15 works that combine text and imagery. Lang says the pieces reflect her tastes in art, literature, and music. The majority of her inspiration, in fact, comes from song lyrics.

“I like working in the cross-section of words and images. Often lyrics are meant to evoke an image, so it’s fun to create works that bring life to those images. There are also a couple of phrases that I’ve heard or said or read that I’ve felt needed to be added to an image.”

Lang hopes to work in graphic design for a company or an agency after Hofstra, and hopes her past graphic design internships at the nonprofit organization CITYarts and SuperPurposes will help her get there. Further down the line, Lang plans to pursue a PhD in history and become a professor.

There will be an opening reception for Word Play on Tuesday, September 24,at 7 p.m. that is free and open to the public.
