Gender Identity Trouble
Speaker: Dr. Robin Dembroff Yale University. Description provided by speaker: “On a common narrative, 'gender identity' is a liberatory concept for gender variant people. However, taken as an 'internal sense of one's gender', I argue that gender identity is ill-suited for this liberatory work. To resolve this problem, I advocate for a relational view of gender identity, on which gender identity is based on how we socially signal gender information. On this view, gender identity is part of the cultural practice of negotiating the future construction of gender categories.”
