Writing Assignments in the STEM Classroom

Writing Assignments in the STEM Classroom presented by Dr. Lisa M. DeTora, Associate Professor of Writing Studies and Rhetoric and Dr. Sabrina G. Sobel, Professor of Chemistry. Effective written communication is fundamental for success in STEM education and careers, yet balancing instruction for documenting scientific content presents critical challenges for professors and students. Special considerations for writing in STEM disciplines include the primary importance of accuracy, the need for structured formats, and the difficulties of balancing text, tables, and figures.  This workshop will review some concerns of scientific writing and offer advice about developing templates, rubrics, and heuristics to help students produce better deliverables while easing the burden of grading for faculty members.

Workshop topics include:

•             Special considerations for writing in STEM disciplines

•             The need for accurate content

•             Balancing text with other elements (tables, figures, notation)

•             Planning at all research stages

•             Streamlined approaches to assignments and grading

Please join us for this informative workshop on April 12. RSVP to the Provost’s Office at FRED@hofstra.edu
