Baseball vs. College of William & Mary (DH)

The Hofstra University Baseball team enters the final weekend of the 2019 regular season still in contention for a Colonial Athletic Association Championship bid as the Pride hosts William & Mary in a three-game series Friday and Saturday. The teams will play a doubleheader Friday at noon and a single game Saturday, also at noon.

Just two teams -- Elon and Charleston -- have clinched spots in the CAA Championship, which takes place next Wednesday through Saturday at James Madison, leaving four open slots. Six teams are competing for the final four spots with one game separating the six squads.

Hofstra (17-29-1, 9-12 CAA) is currently on the outside looking in but can punch its ticket with a sweep of the Tribe and could also qualify with two wins based on the outcomes of other series' around the league. The Pride took two of three from Delaware last weekend and is 3-1-1 in their last five games. Austin Gauthier had a good week, batting .600 with seven RBIs and six runs scored, and earned CAA Player of the Week accolades. Jack Jett and Michael James each collected wins on the mound, while Vito Friscia(200 career hits) and Rob Weissheier (100 career hits) each reached career milestones over the weekend.

William & Mary (29-19, 10-11 CAA) is also looking to secure a playoff spot and is one of the hottest teams in the league entering the weekend. The Tribe has won four consecutive games and is coming off a 9-8 win over St. Joseph's Tuesday. William & Mary sports a 3.95 team ERA overall but lowers that number to 3.66 in CAA action. Bodie Sheehan, (4-2, 2.56), Zach Tsakounis (4-2, 3.38), and Wade Strain (5-3, 3.55) anchor the William & Mary pitching staff, while Hunter Smith tops the squad offensively with 11 home runs, 36 RBIs, 11 doubles and 32 runs scored. Zach Pearson has a .311 average, 30 RBIs and nine stolen bases.

Hofstra swept William & Mary in Williamsburg last season, while the Tribe took all three games in Hempstead in 2017. Overall, Hofstra is 18-30 all-time against William & Mary.
