Baseball vs. UNCW

Fresh off a win at Rutgers, the Hofstra University Baseball team returns home to host Colonial Athletic Association rival UNCW in a three-game series that begins Friday at 11 a.m. (new time). Saturday's game will start at 3 p.m. (new time) and Sunday's first pitch is slated for 12 p.m.

The Pride is 8-24 overall and 2-7 in league play. Hofstra defeated Rutgers, 6-4, Wednesday, using a five-run sixth inning to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 6-2 lead. Jimmy Joyce had the big hit, a three-run double, while Anthony D'OnofrioAlex Sica, and Vito Friscia also drove in runs in the game. Steven Boscia earned the win after allowing two runs on five hits over five innings. Seamus Brazill allowed two unearned runs over three innings and Daniel Page slammed the door in the ninth for his third save in as many chances.

Friscia continues to lead the Pride in batting with a .283 average, nine doubles, five home runs and 16 RBIs. Rob Weissheier is batting .274 with six doubles, three triples, two home runs and 13 RBIs. Ryan Rue, Saturday's starter, is 1-4 with a 5.14 ERA. Jack Jett (0-2) will start the opener on Friday, while Mark Faello (1-2) will join the weekend rotation and start Sunday.

UNCW comes into the weekend with an 20-18 record overall and a 5-4 league mark. The Seahawks have lost two in a row and are coming off a 14-7 setback against No. 7 North Carolina State this past Tuesday. Greg Jones has been UNCW's top hitter with a .311 average and 26 stolen bases. Kep Brown has six home runs and 37 RBIs, while Cole Weiss has delivered a pair of home runs and 31 RBIs. Luke Gessell, who will start Friday, is 4-2 with a 2.36 ERA in nine starts. Zarion Sharpe (0-1, 6.97) will start Saturday and Landen Roupp (2-2, 3.32) will get the ball on Sunday.

Hofstra is 11-38 all-time against the Seahawks. UNCW took two of three games in Wilmington last season and in Hempstead in 2017.

Following the UNCW series, the Pride will travel to Manhattan Tuesday for a 5 p.m. game.
