Hofstra Chorale and Chamber Choir
The Hofstra Chorale and Chamber Choir present “Fresh & Fearless,” featuring David Conte’s Invocation and Dance and other works inspired by its themes of life, love, and loss. Commissioned by the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus in 1986 during one of the most devastating moments in the HIV/AIDS crisis in the United States, the work's text features excerpts from Walt Whitman’s expansive elegy on the death of Lincoln, “When Lilacs in the Dooryard Bloom’d." Text and music together create a brave, face-to-face confrontation between the singer and Whitman's “strong deliveress,” Death. But the prevailing current that pulses through this work, as well as the rest of the pieces on the program, is one of hope not despair--a celebration of loves loved, and lives lived to their fullest.
