Maurice A. Deane School of Law Distinguished Practitioner Lecture

The Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University invites you to attend the Distinguished Practitioner Lecture “35 Years -- The Challenge of Staying Principled, Relevant and Happy,” to be delivered by Arthur Schwartz  ’78, attorney and board president, Advocates for Justice.


Arthur Schwartz, a 1974 graduate of Columbia University who also attended Hofstra Law School, has been representing unions and workers for more than 30 years and is one of New York City’s top labor lawyers. He has worked as general counsel for the Transit Workers Union and has been counsel to DC 37′s largest blue collar locals for many years. He has also served as general counsel to Local 1-2 Utility Workers of America at Con Edison, the Transport Workers Union at National Grid and the Professional Staff Congress of the City University of New York. He has also worked as counsel to Local 32B-32J, SEIU, the Emergency Medical Service Workers Union, Teamsters Local 237, and Local 1182 of the Communications Workers, which represents traffic enforcement officers.

Mr. Schwartz has achieved many important victories for unions and union members in state and federal court, at arbitrations and in administrative proceedings. He has won landmark whistle-blower cases, employment discrimination cases, Equal Pay Act cases, public employee free speech cases, and other federal and state law civil rights cases after trial. He has successfully litigated pension fund cases, and he has handled hundreds of arbitrations regarding various contractual and disciplinary disputes. He has also specialized in addressing workplace safety, having litigated more than 40 Occupational Safety and Health Administration cases and handled numerous matters involving worker exposure to toxins, such as asbestos, in the workplace.
