Humanities New York Reading and Discussion Series: Your Silence Will Not Protect You! The Writing of Audre Lorde

The Department of English in collaboration with the Hofstra Cultural Center presents the Humanities New York Reading and Discussion Series: Your Silence Will Not Protect You! The Writing of Audre Lorde. This series will feature the following works by Audre Lorde: Cancer Journals, Collected Poems, and Sister Outsider.

 

Facilitator: Jennifer Henton, Department of English, Hofstra University

Featuring

Cancer Journals

In this collection of essays, Lorde describes her experiences with breast cancer, and how medical treatment and recovery relate to issues of gender and race.

 

Collected Poems

This is the definitive collection of Lorde’s poetry, with poems from her early and late careers, featuring work both well-known and waiting to be discovered by new readers.

 

Sister Outsider

This collection of essays by Lorde constitutes her most explicit challenge to the oppression she experienced and observed in the lives of others, including racism, sexism, and homophobia.

Location for all discussions: Hofstra Hall Parlor, South Campus

 

Admission is free and open to the public. Advance registration is required.

Seating is limited to 15 participants per reading/discussion. Please RSVP for each individual session.

 

Registrants who  commit to discussions can borrow copies of the books to be discussed for a refundable $20 fee after the series. Limited copies available. Please note that participants who wish to “drop in” may attend, but should contact the facilitator at jennifer.henton@hofstra.edu to find out how to obtain a copy of the materials.

 

Light refreshments will be served.
