Terror and Beauty: How Terrorists Can Use Mathematics to Build Cells That Are Probably the Most Difficult for Law Enforcement to Disrupt

Dr. Jonathan D. Farley explains how math theory can help break up terror cells. He explains - Ted K. opened an envelope. To ordinary eyes, it would appear to be a letter from his cousin John, but Ted did not have a cousin named John. He could clearly see that the first letter of each word in the first paragraph spelled, in Roman script, a phrase in Elbonian: “HELP US.” By analyzing social networks and using lattice theory, which includes Boolean algebra, Farley thinks, “It’s better to fight smarter, not harder,” in combating terror and estimating our vulnerability to future attacks.

Speaker: Dr. Jonathan D. Farley, Associate Professor of Mathematics, Morgan State University
