Professor Howard Cinnamon Memorial Concert

Hofstra students, graduates and faculty will present a concert in memory of longtime music professor Howard Cinnamon on Saturday, March 3, at 8 p.m. at The Helene Fortunoff Theater. Dr. Cinnamon -- remembered as “a devoted and exceptional teacher, and a model of leadership” by Music Department Chair Philip Stoecker -- served on the Hofstra faculty from 1985 until his death in October 2017. The concert will feature works by Bach, Chopin, Brahms, Liszt, Vaughn, Williams, Elgar, Sondheim and Hofstra music professor Chandler Carter.

Dr. Cinnamon, 69, taught music theory at Hofstra. He grew up in Hicksville, NY, deciding at the age of nine that he would pursue a career in music. A respected conductor, he spent 25 years as the music director of the Island Symphony Orchestra, as well as  serving for many years as music director of the Bay Area Fine Arts (BAFA) Symphony.

Dr. Cinnamon served as interim director of the Hofstra University Symphony Orchestra and organizer and conductor of the University Chamber Orchestra and the Hofstra Summer Reading Orchestra. As a scholar and theorist he presented papers at conferences on the music of Brahms, Liszt, Schoenberg, Stravinsky and Tchaikovsky, and published papers on Liszt, Schoenberg, Bach, Chopin, Brahms and Tchaikovsky.
