Hofstra Long Island Regional Scripps Spelling Bee

The 2018 Hofstra Long Island Regional Scripps Spelling Bee is scheduled for February 4, 2018 and February 11, 2018. On February 4 participating students will take a written test and approximately the top third scorers will be invited back on February 11 for the traditional oral spell down. This is the official regional competition for the Scripps National Spelling Bee, which takes place annually during Memorial Day week in Washington D.C. The Hofstra regional competition is open to the winners of official local (Nassau and Suffolk county) school bees. Students in grades 4 - 8 are eligible for competition. At the 2017 Hofstra Long Island regional Scripps Spelling Bee, Ryan Himmelsbach, a seventh grader at Paul J. Gelinas Junior High School in East Setauket, NY, took first place with the winning word “requiem.” The competition began with more than 130 fourth- through eighth-grade students from schools across Nassau and Suffolk County. The Bee went 11 rounds before Ryan was announced the winner.

 

Registration is from 10:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. ONLY --Immediately followed by the written exam.
