Hofstra Wrestling vs. Drexel

The Hofstra Wrestling team will return to Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) action at the David S. Mack Physical Education Center this Saturday, February 3 when the Pride host the Dragons of Drexel University at 1 p.m.  Hofstra, currently 8-7 overall and 2-2 in the EIWA, is coming off a 22-17 win over the Bulls of Buffalo in a non-conference battle on January 27 at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. After going down 14-0 in the match, the Pride rallied back to win six of the next seven weight classes to post the victory. Red-shirt freshman Chris Mauriello pulled out a win in the waning seconds at 157, sophomore Sage Heller had a big win by fall at 174, red-shirt junior Nezar Haddad had the go-ahead decision at 197 and senior Michael Hughes secured the win with a major decision at 285.

The Pride continue to be led by Hughes, who improved to 26-2 on the season. He is now third in Division I in pins with 13. Hughes is ranked sixth by WIN, seventh by Track Wrestling, eighth by Amateur Wrestling News, ninth by The Open Mat, and tenth by FloWrestling and InterMat.

Junior Nezar Haddad is 14-11 on the season at 197, red-shirt freshman Charlie Kane is 9-13 at 141, Heller is 9-10 at 174, classmate Vinny Vespa is 7-12 at 133 and red-shirt junior Cory Damiana is 6-12 at 184.

Drexel is 8-3 overall and 3-3 in EIWA matches this season. The Dragons have wins over LIU Post, Pitt-Johnstown, SIU Edwardsville, Iowa State, Keystone, Franklin and Marshall, Army West Point and Columbia. Their losses have come against Navy, Lehigh (by criteria), and Binghamton.

The Dragons are led by fourth-ranked freshman Austin DeSanto, who is 19-4 on the season at 133 pounds. Red-shirt junior Stephen Loiseau is 21-7 at 197 and red-shirt senior Alex DeCiantis is 12-2 at 184.
