Privacy exhibition by Henning Strassburger

The Department of Fine Arts, Design, Art History presents Privacy an exhibition of recent work by Henning Strassburger at the Rosenberg Gallery in Calkins Hall, through October 25.  Berlin-based artist Henning Strassburger investigates the role and production of painting against an increasingly digital and image-saturated culture. Inhabiting a long tradition of abstract painting, Strassburger’s work is characterized by free-form and expressionistic gestures. He attempts to eliminate any trace of his hand, applying paint in thin layers on flat fields of white primer that seem to be mechanized, resisting the kind of thick and uneven application typical of much abstract expressionism.

“For me, this is the challenge for the contemporary painter - to produce a painting that looks like a print,” the artist has said. His paintings take inspiration from advertising color schemes or draw on commercial imagery, reflecting on painting’s displacement as a dominant force of visual culture over the course of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Strassburger studied fine arts at the UdK Berlin and later at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. He is shown internationally at Sies + Höke, Düsseldorf, Germany; Studiolo, Milan, Italy; BolteLang, Zurich, Switzerland; Soy Capitan, Berlin, Germany; Neue Galerie Gladbeck, Gladbeck, Germany; Kunstverein Reutlingen, Reutlingen, Germany; Annarumma gallery, Naples, Italy; Galerie Fiebach, Minninger, Cologne, Germanyand Kavi Gupta Gallery, Chicago.  Strassburger Lives and works in Berlin, Germany.
