Sophocles’ Antigone

Hofstra University Honors College presents Sophocles’ Antigone presented by Theatrikos Kyklos Troupe. Antigone is a humane and political play against oppression, and is regarded as the finest surviving drama of ancient Greek literature and the most complete, both structurally and in terms of dialogue. It deals with all the key elements of civilization -- polis, demos, tyranny, law, hubris, discipline, anarchy -- making it a timeless theatrical yet civil manifesto. Today, at a time when our fundamental principles are questioned, challenged and sometimes threatened, the exceptional dramatic structure and the sense of catharsis of the play evokes a contemporary hope against autocracy. Antigone could not be more relevant.
