Northwell Special Medical Education Presentation/Discussion: Competency-Based Medical Education �' Barriers and Future Directions
Wednesday, October 24th, 7:30-8:30am Dr. James Frank will be guest-speaking at Board Room at North Shore University Hospital for a special medical education presentation/discussion. The title of this presentation is: Competency-Based Medical Education " Barriers and Future Directions. Dr. Frank is a member of the Royal College in Canada and is an expert on competency-based medical education (bio below). He is an engaging speaker and very grounded in clinical medicine.
For those interested, Dr. Frank will also be offering individual “consultation/mentoring” sessions from 8:30-9:30am.

Dr. Frank is a clinician-educator with a focus on all aspects of health profession training systems.
He currently holds roles of the Director, Specialty Education, Strategy and Standards in the Office of Specialty Education at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and the Director of Educational Research & Development in the Department of Emergency Medicine, University of Ottawa. An associate professor at the University of Ottawa, Faculty of Medicine, he is cross-appointed to the Faculty of Education, University of Ottawa and the Department of Graduate Studies, Ontario Institute for Studies in Education.
He obtained his MD from the University of Ottawa, Faculty of Medicine, and his FRCPC in Emergency Medicine at the University of Toronto. He has a Masters of Education from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education. He has published and presented widely in medical education, where his research interests include: competency-based education, faculty development, program evaluation, and curriculum development. He is known for his work with the Royal College on the CanMEDS Project since 1994, and as an award-winning teacher.
Dr. Frank was the recipient of the 2013 Council Award Honouring Outstanding Physicians, presented by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, to recognize physicians whose performance and expertise in their career has been exemplary. He was the 2005 EM Teacher of the Year in Canada, an honour awarded by the Canadian Association for Emergency Physicians (CAEP), and the 2007 Meredith Marks new educator award winner from the Canadian Association for Medical Education (CAME). He was also a finalist for Canada’s Globe and Mail Top 40 Under 40 in 2011.
