Bridging the Gap between Science and Practice:
Can Nontraditional Effect Size Indicators Help?
Communicating the effectiveness of interventions is often a challenge for academic researchers. Traditional effect size indicators (e.g., r, Cohen’s d) are not easily understood by people without statistical training. Nontraditional effect size indictors (e.g., CLES, BESD) have been developed for this reason. These measures are intended to be easier for the general public to understand. However, people’s ability to interpret the measures has not been tested. This talk describes two studies that examined people’s perceptions of traditional and nontraditional effect size indicators.
Dev Dalal is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at the University of Connecticut. He earned his PhD in Industrial-Organizational Psychology from Bowling Green State University in 2012. His research focuses on applied judgment and decision making, measurement theory, and quantitative methodology.
