Hofstra Long Island Regional Spelling Bee - Rescheduled Comments
Fourth through Eighth grade students from schools in Nassau and Suffolk Counties will compete in the Hofstra Long Island Regional Spelling Bee on Sunday, February 24 at Hofstra University's John Cranford Adams Playhouse. The winner of the Bee will go on to represent the region at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., later this spring. The Hofstra Long Island Regional Spelling Bee was originally scheduled to be held on Sunday, February 10 but due to a snowstorm the Bee had to be cancelled and has now been rescheduled.
Hofstra University’s Dr. Carole Clark Papper, a noted professor of writing studies and composition, will serve as head judge and moderator of the event.
Contestants have already been pre-qualified. Ticketed guests ONLY.
Schedule for the day:
10:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. Registration
10:30 a.m. - 11:45 a.m. Written exam (students will take the test in small groups, on a rolling
basis as they arrive)
Noon Preliminary oral round
1:00 p.m. - 2 p.m. Break
2:00 p.m. Finalists announced " test scores for the written exam and the
preliminary oral round will be added together. The number of finalists are
expected to be between 35-50 children)
2:15 p.m. The traditional spelling bee “spelldown” will begin and will continue until
there is a winner.
